I’m hosting an impromptu Easter dinner this year and wanted to add a little something to the table setting. But time is limited, so I came up with this very cute, simple and QUICK little Easter basket that will be perfect as a place card, dessert item or a take home favor/treat gift.
Here’s what I did: I used a Size H crochet hook (Susan Bates) and two strands of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarns (one solid and one variegated). Both colors were left over little balls from previous projects.
Round 1: Complete a “magic loop” technique – chain 3 and then complete 12 DC within your magic loop. After pulling closed, join with a SL stitch to the first DC made.
Round 2: Chain 3 – (Counts as 1st DC) Complete one more DC in that same stitch. Continue around circle making 2 DC inside each stitch for a total of 24 DC stitches. Join with a SL stitch into 1st DC stitch. Bottom of basket completed – no more increases.
Round 3 (two choices): Chain 2 – In next stitch, make 1 HDC going through both loops and continue making 1 HDC in each stitch around for a total of 24 HDC. Join with SL stitch into 1st HDC stitch, crocheting through both loops gives you a more rounded bottom. If you prefer a flat bottom, make your 24 HDC in the BLO (back loop only) for this round. After making your 24 HDC in the BLO, join with SL stitch into 1st HDC stitch made. Also, at this point, I like to weave in my ends from the magic loop, a little easier at this time.
Round 4: Chain 1. Complete 24 SC stitches around (place a stitch marker in your first SC). Join with SL stitch into 1st SC stitch made.
Round 5: Chain 2. Crochet 24 HDC stitches around. Join with SL stitch into 1st HDC stitch.
Round 6 Finished edge: Chain 1. Complete 24 Reverse Single Crochet (Rev SC) stitches along the upper edge. Here is a great link: www.planetjune.com/rsc to see how to do the reverse single crochet without the twist effect. Second picture shows where I placed my last Reverse Single Crochet stitch.
Finishing: I pulled my double stranded loop through my stitches to the inside of the basket and then inserted my cut yarn through a large darning needle. Weave your double strands of yarn in and out and back and forth through several stitches to secure your yarn. You can block your basket for a more definite shape. I just spray water on my finished basket so that it is fairly wet and I use a small glass bottle (something I usually find in my pantry that fits nicely) wrap the bottle in plastic wrap if you are concerned the label colors might run onto your yarn, then let it air dry. Once dried you have a truly nice round shaped bowl to decorate and fill with whatever you choose.
Add a little Easter grass to your basket and fill it with jelly beans, robin egg candies, marshmallow peeps (my favorite) or put your guests’ name on an egg and place the egg in the basket for a one-of-a-kind name card.
You could always add buttons and bows to the basket too. Hope you enjoy making these little baskets as much as I have.
HAPPY CREATING!!

I love this little bowl but can I say that in round 3 this bowl works better by doing the hdc in the back loop only.
Thanks Susan, I give that option too on my home page with a newer blog about this little bowl 🙂
